Tips for Customizing This Valentine Granny Square Blanket
One of the best things about this Valentine granny square blanket pattern is how easy it is to customize. Whether you want to stick with a classic Valentine color palette or make it your own, there are plenty of ways to adapt the design.
Try a color swap:
While pinks, reds, and creams give this blanket a traditional Valentine look, this pattern works beautifully with any color combination. Soft pastels create a springtime feel, while neutrals with a pop of color make the blanket more modern and versatile.
Make a solid-only version:
If you prefer a simpler look, you can skip the flower squares and use only the solid granny squares throughout the blanket. This creates a clean, timeless crochet blanket while still benefiting from the cozy texture of using two strands of worsted weight yarn held together.
Use scrap yarn:
This pattern is also a great way to use up leftover yarn. Because the blanket is worked in individual granny squares, it’s easy to mix and match colors from your stash. A scrap yarn version adds personality and makes every finished blanket completely one of a kind.
No matter how you customize it, this granny square crochet blanket is designed to be flexible, fun, and perfect for creating a handmade piece that feels truly personal.

Notes

Note- If you are doing two differnet colors for your solid squares like I did in the sample, be sure to split your “solid” square count between your two colors.
Example- I made the baby size. I did two colors. So I had 9 Pink solid squasres and 9 White solid squares to total 18.
Sizing will be written Baby (Throw, Queen, King)
Each square you will be holding two strands of size 4 worsted weight yarn together
The reason I chose to use two strands rather than one strand of bulky or super bulky yarn is that I found those yarns to be too stiff, and I really wanted this blanket to be flowy and have a good drape.
The other reason is weight. Most bulky yarns are rather heavy, and while two strands do create some weight, I still think it is lighter than if I used super bulky yarn.
So feel free to use my two-strand method, or if you find a bulky yarn you love, you can use that as well!

How to create your Flower Granny Square Blanket layout
The layout follows a checkerboard pattern, meaning Flower and Solid squares alternate across each row and each column (similar to a chessboard).
How to Arrange the Squares
- Lay your squares out on a flat surface before seaming.
- Start with one Flower square, then place one Solid square next to it.
- Continue alternating Flower and Solid squares across the row.
- For the next row, start with the opposite square type than the row above.
- If Row 1 starts with a Flower square, Row 2 should start with a Solid square.
- Repeat this alternating pattern until all squares are laid out.
This ensures the Flower squares are evenly spaced throughout the blanket, as shown in the layout example photo.
Blanket Sizes & Layout Breakdown
Baby Blanket (36 Squares Total)
- 18 Flower Squares
- 18 Solid Squares
- Arrange in a 6 × 6 grid
Alternate Flower and Solid squares across each row, switching the starting square for each new row.
Throw Blanket (64 Squares Total)
- 32 Flower Squares
- 32 Solid Squares
- Arrange in an 8 × 8 grid
Follow the same checkerboard layout, alternating squares across rows and columns.
Twin Blanket (144 Squares Total)
- 72 Flower Squares
- 72 Solid Squares
- Arrange in a 12 × 12 grid
Keep the alternating pattern consistent for a balanced look.
Queen Blanket (256 Squares Total)
- 128 Flower Squares
- 128 Solid Squares
- Arrange in a 16 × 16 grid
This larger size makes it especially helpful to lay all squares out first and double-check
placement before seaming.
King Blanket (324 Squares Total)
- 162 Flower Squares
- 162 Solid Squares
- Arrange in an 18 × 18 grid
Work in sections if needed to keep the layout organized.
Helpful Tips
- Take a photo of your layout before seaming so you can easily refer back to it.
- Adjust square placement slightly if you want to customize the look — just keep the total number of Flower and Solid squares the same.
- Stitch markers or safety pins can help keep rows together while seaming.

Seaming your Granny Squares together
- Lay all of your granny squares out in the order you want them to appear in the blanket. Double-check the layout before you start seaming.
- Choose your preferred seaming method and begin joining the squares together.
- For this blanket, I used the Invisible Seam method. (Step by step details on page 11)
- Seam all squares into rows, then seam the rows together to complete the blanket.
- When finished, all granny squares should be completely joined with no loose edges.
Invisible Seam Method
- Lay two granny squares right sides facing up, side by side, with the edges you want to join touching.
- Thread a yarn needle with a length of yarn (about 18–24 inches). Use the same yarn color as your squares for the cleanest look.
- Insert the needle from back to front under the front loop only of the corner stitch on the first square.
- Insert the needle from back to front under the front loop only of the matching corner stitch on the second square.
- Gently pull the yarn through, but do not tighten yet.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the next pair of stitches along the edge.
- Go under the front loop of the next stitch on the first square. Then under the front loop of the matching stitch on the second square.
- After every few stitches, gently pull the yarn snug. The seam will close and the stitches will “disappear,” creating a nearly invisible join.
- Continue seaming to the end of the row. Fasten off securely and weave in ends.
- Repeat this process to seam all squares into rows, then seam the rows together to complete the blanket.

Optional Scalloped Border
Using two strands of yarn held together and a 9 mm crochet hook:
Start at any corner of the blanket and attach your yarn.
Round 1:
Chain 1, then place a single crochet in the same stitch where you attached the yarn.
Single crochet in each stitch around the blanket.
In each corner stitch, place 3 single crochets.
Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.
Round 2 (Decorative Border):
Chain 1, single crochet in the first stitch.
Skip 2 stitches, place 6 double crochets in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch.
Repeat from * to * around the blanket.
As you reach the corners, aim to place the 6 double crochets into the corner stitch to create a smooth, rounded edge.
This round does not need to be exact — if you need to skip 1 stitch or 3 stitches to make the pattern line up nicely, that is perfectly fine.
Slip stitch to the beginning stitch, fasten off, and weave in ends.
Note: This is the final border round, so don’t stress about perfection. Focus on keeping the edge smooth and even — small adjustments will not be noticeable in the finished blanket.
